The short answer

How do you get your first coaching client?

You get your first client by talking to the right people about the problem you solve, then asking if they want help. The hard part is everything in the way. You're not sure who you help. You don't know what to charge. You don't know where your people are. You freeze when it's time to make the offer.

I break that into four milestones: Get Set Up, Get Clear, Get Seen and Get Clients. Each one below has the question it answers, my short answer, the posts to read, and one thing to do this week.

Milestone 1 · Get Set Up

What do I need to set up before my first client?

Less than you think. You need a way for someone to book a call with you, a way to get paid, and the confidence to call yourself a coach out loud. You don't need a logo, a ten-page website or a finished program.

Still in training? Working a full-time job? That's fine. Plenty of coaches build while they work. The goal of this milestone is simple: be ready to say yes when someone asks how to work with you.

Do this week

Set up one booking link and one way to get paid. Then tell three people you're a coach.

Milestone 2 · Get Clear

How do I pick a niche and an offer as a new coach?

Start with the people you already understand and a problem you've lived or solved. Your niche doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be clear enough that someone hears it and thinks of a friend who needs you.

Then build one offer around one result. Give it a price you can say without flinching. You can change all of it later, once real clients tell you what they need.

Do this week

Finish this sentence and say it out loud: "I help ___ who are struggling with ___ get ___."

Milestone 3 · Get Seen

Where do I find potential coaching clients online?

Pick one or two places where your people already spend time, and show up there on purpose. You don't need every platform. You need a plan for the month, a few posts that prove you understand their problem, and an easy way for people to raise their hand.

Social media isn't the only door. Podcasts, speaking and Facebook groups count too.

Do this week

Pick your two platforms. Write down the one problem you'll talk about all month.

Milestone 4 · Get Clients

How do I turn a conversation into a paying client?

Clients come from conversations. Your posts start them. From there, you invite the person to a call, listen more than you talk, and make the offer with a clear price and a clear next step.

If good conversations keep going nowhere, the people you talk to may not know you're a coach. Or you may be skipping the invitation. Both are fixable this week.

Do this week

Reach back out to three people you've already talked with. Ask: "Would it help to hop on a call about this?"

Milestone 5 · Keep Them

Got your first client? Build a program they don't want to leave.

I'm a business and marketing coach for coaches. I make getting clients simple, whether you just got certified or you've been coaching for years.

I was a full-time pharmacist before I became a Certified Professional Coach through an ICF-accredited program. I've spent a decade in marketing and teaching coaches how to market their business. I was named a Top 15 Coach in Los Angeles, I host the Make It Visible podcast, and I wrote The Coaching Business Blueprint.

FAQ

Questions new coaches ask me

How long does it take to get your first coaching client?

It depends more on how many real conversations you're having than on how long you've been certified. A coach who talks to five people a week will get there faster than one who posts every day and talks to no one. Read the full answer.

Do I need a niche before I get my first client?

You need to be able to say who you help and what you help them with in one sentence. That's enough to start. Your niche gets sharper after you work with real people. Find your niche.

How much should I charge as a new coach?

Price a package around the result you help someone get, not by the hour. Pick a number you can say out loud without apologizing, and raise it as you get results. See my pricing framework.

Do I need a website to get my first client?

Not for your first one. You need a way to book a call and a way to get paid. A website starts to matter once people are searching for you by name or by problem.

Which social media platform should a new coach use?

Pick two and go deep instead of spreading thin across five. Choose where your people already spend time, not where you think you should be. How to choose.

Can I get clients without posting every day?

Yes. Posting helps people find you, but clients come from conversations. Spend more time talking with people and less time writing captions. Here's how I do it.

When can I call myself a coach?

The day you start coaching people. You don't need to wait for a credential, a website or your first paying client to say it. Read more.

Where should I start if I'm overwhelmed?
